How it Works

As a student in our state-accredited teacher certification program, you’ll take 10 courses centered around culturally responsive pedagogy and social emotional learning, including content and materials to help prepare you to take your certification exams. You’ll also get clinical practice through an internship or clinical teaching experience.

Each program is split into two sections:

Pre-Clinical Coursework

This section of your program contains the pre-clinical requirements for you to become eligible for internship or student teaching. This prepares you for the profession as it focuses on the foundational principles for teaching and learning.

Clinical Coursework

In this section, your first area of focus is on how literacy is an integral component across all curricula and is specific to the certification area being sought. The second area of focus is on the importance of centering all curricula on students’ assets and needs.

How do I gather fingerprints documentation?

To pursue a Standard Teaching Certificate, you’re required to go through the process of being fingerprinted and background-checked through TEA before moving forward with the Certificate program. This requirement will need to be completed by the end of Course 1. For more information, visit the TEA Fingerprinting Process page.

I have my fingerprints completed. Do I need to re-do them?

The fingerprints need to be linked to your TEAL account in ECOS. If they are not linked, you will need to submit a help desk ticket with TEA and request for your fingerprints to be linked. If you did not go through IdentoGO, you will need to have your fingerprints completed again.

What steps should I take if I have earned my bachelor’s degree outside the U.S.?

If you graduated with a bachelor’s degree (or higher) outside of the U.S., you must complete the following steps before we can review your education background:

Transcript Evaluation and Translation: Obtain an evaluation of your foreign transcripts from an approved evaluation service. This evaluation must include the following details:

  • Course-by-course evaluation: A breakdown of each course you completed, including its title, content, and credit hours.
  • Equivalency to a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or higher): The evaluation should clearly state that your foreign degree is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or higher in the United States.
  • GPA (Grade Point Average): Your GPA should be calculated based on the evaluation of your grades in each course.
  • Units for each course: The evaluation should specify the units or credit hours assigned to each course.
  • Conferred graduation date: The date when you officially completed your degree program and were conferred the degree.

You must ensure that the evaluation service you choose is recognized by TEA. View the list of approved service providers.

Once you have obtained the required evaluation and translated transcripts, you may proceed with submitting your application for review.

If your degree is from a country on the list of exempt countries whose primary language is English, you will not be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) exam. If you have received a degree outside of the U.S. and the country is not listed on the exempt list, you will be required to take the TOEFL iBT exam.

View the TOEFL iBT score breakdown.

Green Quotes

As a member of the Teacher Vacancy Task Force’s (TVTF) working group, Improving Teacher Preparation, our charge was to identify methods that would yield better prepared teachers for Texas’ students. One consistent theme discussed in our working group’s meetings was “Improve alternative certification pathway, particularly for candidates in teacher-of-record roles.”

During my meetings with Teach Us Texas, I have had the opportunity to learn about the program, their targeted preparation and support methods, and their willingness and excitement to truly partner with Texas’ school districts. I trust their methods and partnerships will help improve the alternative certification pathway in Texas.
