Handbook

Program Structure

  • Our state-accredited teacher certification program is centered around culturally responsive pedagogy and social emotional learning to prompt and sustain engagement through research-based practices.

  • You’ll take 10 courses plus Clinical Practice (internship or clinical teaching). Our courses also include content and materials to help prepare you to take your certification exams. The scope and sequence of the program is listed below.

    • Pre-clinical Coursework contains the pre-clinical requirements, as defined by the Texas Administrative Code, for you to become eligible for internship or clinical teaching. This prepares you for the profession as it focuses on the foundational principles for teaching and learning. These courses could be completed as early as 4 months, but this is dependent upon the certification area being sought and the candidates’ allocated time to complete requirements.

    • Clinical Coursework focuses on how literacy is an integral component across all curricula and is specific to the certification area being sought. The second area of focus is on the importance of centering all curricula on students’ assets and needs. The estimated time to complete these courses is 5 months.

    • Bilingual Education or ESL Supplemental Certificate options are available

    • Texas Standard Teacher Certification Requirements:

      • 300 clock hours of coursework

      • 50 hours of field-based experiences

      • Passing score on the appropriate content area exam(s)

      • Passing score on the PPR Exam (EC-12)

      • Successful completion of a 1-year internship or clinical teaching (aka student teaching), defined as a minimum of 490 hours that is not less than an average of 4 hours each day in the subject area and grade level of certification sought at a TEA accredited school

NOTE: Per TEC 21.0452(b)(5), the structure of the program also provides various opportunities for teacher candidates to learn about, practice, and receive feedback on the use of technology to improve teaching and learning for the purpose of increasing student achievement. For more information on how technology is integrated, please see document here
